When to Give Up?

Perhaps you just need to add more discussions. The articles and reviews are obviously working to bring people in, so maybe you could try a New Members Introductions forum at the very top to invite people to make a first (or early) post, and use it to strike up conversations about why they've visited, what their personal situation is, whether they are looking for themselves or someone else ... you know, be welcoming and maybe throw them a few simple questions that invite them to respond further.

Do you know which articles are the most popular? Why not look at discussions around those articles? Maybe talk to people about whether the info helped, are bits missing, do some elements need expanding or clarifying?

Do you have any regulars or people in your sphere whom you are familiar with that you could approach for a forum-style "Interview" - where you pose questions and post their answers afterwards (Admin Zone does this well - check out their interviews).

Your sidebar is also quite long, so perhaps bringing some of those sub-forums out into the main tree might invite more investigation into them by visitors and also get rid of that large chunk of whitespace. :)
