When do you normally upgrade after a major point release (eg. 2.3)?

A broken upgrade is not really severe IMO. Severe would be something bad for you forum that you didn’t realise until quite some time after an upgrade, when reverting would mean losing you posts etc.

I disagree. And bug which requires rolling back an upgrade with a backup is severe IMO.

I upgraded one of my sites (the newest one) today. I encountered a bug, and had to re-install the backup files, twice before I figured out what was causing the issue (cache setting in config.php). Disabled the cache, installed with no problems, and re-enabled the cache. All seems to be working fine. I don't like issues so I'll definitely not be upgrading any of the other sites until at least the next update.

That said, it's partly my fault because I disable the cache on my test server so my upgrade worked flawlessly there. I assumed, not even thinking about trying it with the cache enabled, that it'd work fine on my production server too. A five minute upgrade turned into my site being offline for 15 minutes. 🤦‍♂️

I don't update until all the addons are ready from the developers. I just hope one of the major addon developers we use will not take over a year to update (like they did in the past). Beyond that, I can do without some addons while I wait, but others are more essential. For my own private addons, I update some of those once the third party addons are updated (as a few of my private addons further modify theirs).

What motivates me not to install third-party add-ons is being able to upgrade XF as soon as the latest version is released. I still installed the Cloudflare add-on from @digitalpoint and one of my old add-ons, Footer Pro, but I am able to manage this one alone if there were a compatibility issue.

I'm impatient by nature and I think my head would boil if one of the add-ons I'm using wasn't upgraded for several weeks or even months.

Major versions of software (like XenForo 3) often take about 6 months for the vast majority of kinks to be ironed out.

Minor versions usually take a few months.

Patches are usually fine (not always) and I tend to install security-related patches right after testing them in a staging environment.

I love that image optimization comes "out of the box" with XenForo 2.3, as well as the anchor links for headings.

Having said that, anchor links are highly impractical to use. Why?
  • You need to publish a reply in order to see them (so any table of contents needs to be added to the post afterwards.
  • If you use any local characters (for Serbocroatian it is šđžčć in latin and any character in cyrilic script), the links look like crap (especially the cyrilic).
Example:
my-test-forum-domain/threads/test-post.1/#-3-%D0%BF%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B2%D1%99%D0%B5-%D0%BD%D0%B0-%D1%9B%D0%B8%D1%80%D0%B8%D0%BB%D0%B8%D1%86%D0%B8

Yeah, modern browsers "translate" those when displayed, but still. I'd like to be able to use "chapter" numbers as anchor links. I.e. to edit the anchor links.

All in all - a ton of more good than bad updates, and it works very well on staging, but one suggestion for fixing the anchor links.

I plan to upgrade to 2.3 at some point, think my users will appreciate it. However, it's going to take time for the addons to catch up. Also, my style's original developer went awol, have been doing template updates myself, but it's time to consider a change anyway so I'm considering options.

I usually start my test environment upgrades with the major point release - correcting / re-doing templates etc. - and, if that goes well, then I may upgrade the live site with that main release or await the first update before doing so (2.3.1). Lots of bugs usually get picked up at the point release, so I'd say waiting or 2.3.1 is the safest strategy.

I will always upgrade because I want my forums to be at the cutting edge of forum features.
But specifically with 2.3, its long needed optimisation of JS, Font Awesome and CSS will improve the Lighthouse score and that's important.
And 2.3 will be a stepping stone to 3.0, so the pain of upgrading to 3 will, I think, be partly used in getting to 2.3.
We implemented our own version of Instant Search, adding our editorial to search results, so going to 2.3 will mean we can remove some custom code. Ditto Dark Mode.
We have a lot of addons, and getting all of them upgraded, or finding alternatives if the authors are not upgrading, or biting the bullet and removing some addons all takes time.
By the time the addons are sorted out, I bet we're at 2.3.1 or maybe even 2.3.2.

Does Xenforo get involved in when to install 2.3 cloud for websites ? Do they make sure all the addons are 2.3 compatible before upgrading an individual site ?

Isn't a major part of 2.3 REMOVING JQUERY ?

should that be mentioned ?

Cloud site owners are responsible for choosing when to upgrade their own sites.
They can defer upgrades for 6 months.

We have no involvement.

It's the main reason why addons require updating as far as I'm aware. All addons which use jQuery will have to have their own JS added to replace it.

Until absolutely necessary?
The topic is more topical than ever. Although I am - only ;) - a cloud customer myself, I am also interested in a functional solution. I have also postponed the update a little and will certainly make the switch with the upcoming version 2.3.3.

I think that this will certainly be possible in September 2024.
