Why the desktop version of xF2 does not show the whatsapp button like in the mobile version? Communities would find it useful to share the content directly via whatsapp desktop client...

This suggestion has been implemented. Votes are no longer accepted.
At the time it was added, whatsapp:// links would only be picked up by the mobile app.

Has this changed? Is there a web based share dialog for WhatsApp web? Or something similar for the desktop client?

For example this website:
http://sikhivicharforum.com/blog/index.php/contact-us/about-us/

Opening the website on Firefox or Safari browser shows the whatsapp button and clicking the whatsapp button pops up a screen to connect to desktop whatsapp client, which allows you to share the content to multiple whatsapp groups...

I just tested that on Firefox and Safari on the Mac and it didn't work.

The api in the FAQ is probably the better solution (as it should work in all browsers).

Strange! It is working flawlessly for me on Firefox and Safari, I am on an Apple iMac...

Clicking the whatsapp icon takes me directly to "Send message to..." popup in Whatsapp app... where i can select more than one group to send the message to...

I am talking about this whatsapp https://www.whatsapp.com/download/ ... This is a standalone whatsapp client running on my apple imac desktop...

The whatsapp:// link works for me on my MacBook Pro.

With that in mind, I'll just make it available regardless, I think.
Are you using the desktop client for WhatsApp? I'm using the web version (runs in a browser):

https://web.whatsapp.com/

and the link with whatsapp:// doesn't work with this.

However, the version in the FAQ that is https://api.whatsapp.com/ does work with it.

So amending the current WhatsApp link (for this thread) to this:

https://api.whatsapp.com/
send?text=Implemented%20-%20Whatsapp%20button%20for%20desktop%20version%20of%20xF2...%C2%A0https%3A%2F%2Fxenforo.com%2Fcommunity%2Fthreads%2Fwhatsapp-button-for-desktop-version-of-xf2.132691%2F

works for the web version or the desktop version. For the web version, you get this:

1503085515185.webp

which then opens the web version.

If you have the desktop version installed, you get this:

1503085575301.webp

allowing you to choose where to send it (either desktop client or web) and remember your choice for the future.

It doesn't work for me in chrome 61. I'm using the web version whatsapp.
If I click the button it does nothing.

There's things I don't like about that approach, but I do like that it works with WhatsApp web.

Primarily the annoying thing about it is that it opens in a new window (like our other share buttons do) but then that window stays open. Or at least it does if you are using the desktop client. There's not a lot we can do to change that so we'd just have to put up with it.

I'm not 100% sure what the behaviour is with WhatsApp web. Presumably you have to click "Send". Does that open another new tab?

I'm going to change it and roll it out here, but I'm a bit torn. The other thing the api link helps with is that it will presumably work whether or not you have a WhatsApp client or even WhatsApp account which will avoid the perhaps unexpected behaviour of the button just not doing anything in these cases.

Let's see how we get on... (should be live now).

No. The new tab is opened when you click on the WhatsApp button at the bottom of a thread. When you click on the Send button, it opens WhatsApp in the same tab with an overlayed contact list to select who to share with. This I think works well for the web version.

Anyway, thanks for making the change. (y)

The popup is now showing-up in Firefox as well as in Safari on an iMac and stays there even i click send... However, i am still able to post the link to multiple groups in both Firefox $ Safari browsers. but the popup stays...
