What is the best way to make a logo with photoshop?

I've made a logo, but I feel it is lacking in some way.

Here is what it looks like on my site:



I've seen a lot of forums with logos which have a small image, and text so I tried to take that approach with the above.

What do I need to the logo to make it nice?

Should I start completely from scratch?

I'd personally make the subheading "Tech Discussion Forums" smaller in font size and styled differently from the main heading.
