i've been asking this question for quite a while now but did not get the answer i'm looking for ,

They are basing those numbers on their own personal websites logs. I know 10s of 1000s of users that have never visted the w3schools.com website. A better stat would be published by Facebook or Google.

The point was... 800 x 600 is not the most popular browser resolution, and thus far, everything above and linked below, does not come close to 800 x 600 being remotely popular at all.

1024, 1280 & 1366 seem to be the most popular width resolutions, varying in height resolutions.

My personal idea has been 1024x768 and higher, and it seems like I was right about that

I find it hard to relate to statistics though, because you can usually get very varied results (just look at the browser market share debacle etc).

It is more or less useless, cause it only lists the most popular resolution, but could give you an indication of what your target audience is "most likely" using (unless you are like me and are color blind, makes it a bit harder ). Funny to see that 1366x768 is the most popular resolution in large parts of Africa, did not expect that.

All that aside, this is why you see most sites developing in the 960px-1000px width range. Even without the window being maximized it's a good size to view the site at.

Regardless of the actual pixel count what you should keep in mind is the aspect ratio. Widescreen (16x9) is very popular these days.

Maybe. I mean, we had a discussion on the possibility of 800x600 actually being the most popular screen resolution. LMAO

Not many people now design with 800x600 screen res in mind these days, instead shifting over to 1024x768. With 960px being the usual most go for on fixed width. 760px is too narrow when coming to forums and can cause cramping with the layout e.t.c

I guess if you run a business website selling something, it can still pay off to use 760px fixed width to cover all, still makes sense in that respect. But does suit website design mostly and not forum boards.

I design fixed layouts on 980px width, so it fits nicely most of the visitors' screens. Looks like the small screens percentage is really really low.
