What is following people for?

What is following people for?

I thought it would mark their messages somehow or send me an alert when they post, but I did not notice anything like this. It just seems to be a list of users, that is not actually used for anything.

What am I missing?

Oh, I see it now. You can set which newsfeeds to appear in. Interesting idea.
