What cellphone would you recommend me? ($100-200)

Thankfully only a handful of countries use CDMA.

GSM allows much more freedom :)
 
HTC Desire. The little time I had it the actual phone itself was very good. The only downfall I can see with htc s that it takes time for them to update their software to the latest android software. Then after that you have to wait for your service provider to cram in their junk and then get it approved by google.

When I have been in this situation in the past, I take a trip down to my service provider and see what deal that they can offer me on a new phone. I have always received a good phone for a much cheaper price without extending the plan.

wow that's crazy! if you wait until the iphone 5 comes out i'll sell you my i4 for 100usd ...damn that's expensive($870 was a wtf moment for me)...I sold a jailbroken and unlocked i3 to a gamer friend a few years back after I posted a video of me controlling my private modded halo 2 server and playing online poker at UB and he was like ohh I need it and I thought I was being greedy taking $300 for it shipping included...his case also the same , he said that where he was to get an iphone and have it capable for their providers (at the time< I'm not current if this still applies) would cost like 800 and they had no other resources except like ebay and other online merchants. He kept thanking me over and over I couldn't get it. I still don't understand why it is so expensive.

As far as advice alone goes on phones(assuming you want more than a basic phone)...pretty much it's either android or iOS. Take your flavor. It is all preference as they all (minus the iphone flash support natively

) will eventually support all of the same basic and expanded features give or take a slight difference.
 
While we're talking phones and OSes, does anyone have experience with WP7? The HTC Arrive that Sprint's getting next month looks really nice and I love WP7's live tile thing, but obviously it doesn't have as much app support as Android (though apparently I'm not going to able to upgrade as soon as I had originally thought and been told...grr).
 
Some providers allow you to upgrade early for a nominal fee. If you really don't want to wait you could look into that.

I know; I think I get a discount now that I've passed a year, but don't get a free upgrade until December. Problem is that I'm on a family plan and don't pay the bill myself, so it's understandably out of my hands. ;)

Just as a note....almost everyone I know with a blackberry, has a broken menu navigation button. Also for the power of the device, the screen is low res (feels tiled like a bad digital cable connection) and the available functions are limited. My uncle and his immediate family all get free blackberry phones because of his job. Only one of them has the original phone that was issued. The rest get replaced or fixed often. If you aren't active at all, or wear a suit in an office then a blackberry would suit you just fine. Which is funny being said because this phone will break in your pocket but take a licking in reference to the amount of times you can drop this thing and it still work. I would seriously split your decision between apple and android at this point if you are doing anything more than using a phone as a phone. Also I don't believe the 5820 can be used on a 3g network but that only effects you pending your local service providers. But again for what you pay it is slacking. Most of my friends that also use HTC (I forget which models) can't get phone calls when they are using say the browser or tethering the connection to a pc and also most don't have access to 3g but it may not be the phones it may be the providers.)
 
HTC Incredible. Fantastic phone, fast, amazing camera quality, excellent form factor, HTC Sense is superb. Only caveat is battery life but you can fix that with a $40 extended battery and it will easily last you 2 days without a charge with average use. Even with the extended battery, the phone is relatively small and not heavy, able to be fit in a pocket. It's a good time to start looking at upgrades as the prices drop with rumors of new phone entries...
 
Thanks for clarifying a bit on HTC I don't actually own one, but that is the only gripe friends of mine who do own one have (using the phone as a modem and talking simultaneously) which is really not that big of a deal as it is a phone first and not being a modem for your laptop. In reference to TheLaw's posting I would say his observation is acute as none of my friends have any other complaints about the phone as a unit itself and they have been upgrading from htc to htc so that says a lot.

This issue has nothing to do with the phone but with the network. Verizon and Sprint both use CDMA technology and cannot use 3G and Voice at the same time. AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM and voice and data are simultaneous. I have heard that the 4G phones (not really 4G but I digress) may allow simultaneous voice and data and possibly also on the Verizon network. However, those phones are new, not out on VZW and much more expensive. If that's what you want, stick with T-Mo or AT&T which is faster for data as well. The "reliability" of the network in most major US cities is not of tremendous difference from my experience (except if using the iPhone which is certainly spotty.)
 
Yup that's the issue exactly but I am not familiar with the HTC lineup enough to know whether or not it is the device or the network..I know for example one particular friend has the EVO (I think) and he gets kicked offline (tethered tablet PC) when a call comes through on his tmobile networked device. Any ideas...I would love to be able to give him an answer.
 
This thread actually came up at the perfect time. My wife and I currently have 8310 Blackberrys. While she is wanting to get an Iphone, I cannot in good conscious be tied to Apples restrictions.

That being said, we had the opportunity to get hands on with an HTC Evo. It seemed like very nice technology, but I'm wondering if it's overkill for what we do. We essentially do minimal web browsing, and a fair amount of text messaging. As I've been researching, I'm attempting to determine if we should go with a 3G or 4G phone based on what we do. I do like the HTC Aria, due to what we can get it for (1 penny).

Any input would be welcome!
