I am trying to figure out how to provide a facility for newcomers to ask for help that is only seen by them and someone on the admin team.

I can do that jus fine for the viewing of the contents but I would like it to be associated by a Help link on the public nav. i.e if the person clicks on that link the Category and Forum associated with the facility will be shown at the top of the main forum list, I am having trouble figuring out the Public Nav element.

I thought I could make the new category invisible normally and make if and its child forum appear when the nav button is clicked.

Does it have to be a forum under a category? What you're trying to do is a lot easier if you just want to have an individual forum that is not displayed in the list and then having a link to it.

But for categories, 'out of the box' categories are just virtual anchor links shown on the main forum page so if you flag a category to not show in the list then the only way to create a link to that category directly would be to turn on the Create pages for categories option in the ACP (under "Nodes & forum list" in Options).

You could still create a nav link to a forum under the hidden category but unless that option for pages for categories is turned on you can't link to the hidden category to display that category and its child forums.
