XF 2.1 .webm and .webp, etc

there 2 new picture / animated pictures format that been released lately and the forum is not letting uploading those pictures... will there be fix on that or?

I was going based off OP stating they were unable to do so and a staff member seemingly confirming that the case because it's not supported by Apple. Either way, it's proven now that it can be done so no need to go any further about it.
I think the issue is not whether you can attach a .webp file but whether XF considers it to be a valid image file or not; at the moment it does not (unless I'm totally mistaken and haven't tried lately).

Maybe there is because there seems to be some confusion now I think between uploading attachments and displaying as media.

  • webp and webm can be uploaded as attachments if the site owner has included them in the list of allowable extensions (On this site webm is allowed but not webp I think)
  • webm can be uploaded to the Media gallery here, and will display (on all browsers) after it has been processed and converted.
  • AFAIK there is no way to upload webp or webm and have them displayed in posts. On any website you cannot (yet) display webp in the normal way (<img src="xxx.webp">) and be compatible with all browsers. The only viable way is to use png or jpg fallback, which uses a more convoluted code (the picture tag) with fallback alternatives

with edge moving the chromium... the only major user base not capable of viewing webp files is safari users on ios devices. or basically any browser using the same rendering engine on ios devices. of course, there are tons of safari users on macos as well but that number is probably not as large as the number of iphone/ipad users out there but this would mostly change from one forum to another.

i am just glad that mozilla ended up supporting these file formats few months ago.

yup. xenforo would have to natively support webp as an image format. right now it is treated like a regular file. i have been using imgur to host images in webp format and it works well. but since xenforo does not support webp natively, it only works if you have proxy disabled for domain hosting the webp files.
