View threads but not view content: disallows viewing thread in the New posts list.

If a permission allows viewing of threads, but not viewing of content, there users sees the threads as expected in the forum view thread list.

However they are unable to see the new posts list.

You would expect it to be the same as forum view, ie they would be able to see the list but not the content.

For what it's worth this is also inconsistent with the API. The API endpoint calls filterViewable which removes threads you can't view the contents of from the results, even though they're visible in the forum thread list. We had to add another permission for viewing the contents of threads; the default one would be enabled so the threads would be returned by the API, and viewing the threads would check our new permission.

Bug or by design, but it's annoying, if a user has permission to see threads, why can't they see those threads in What's new.

Did anyone find a workaround for this? Cheers.

It's incredibly annoying if a guest finds the site and the main homer page is showing latest threads, we could actually be losing registrations due to visitors/guests not seeing that there is plenty of content.

Exactly that, we want to encourage a particular user group to subscribe. We want them to see the threads and when they cannot see the content they might hopefully subscribe. As it is, they think there is no new content, so why bother even returning!

I've edited my post slightly as it isn't to do with seeing the content per se but seeing the thread titles. Showing the titles in the New lists act asa kind of teaser - this has to be the main point of showing thread titles but not content. Even if the title is something as uninteresting as "Wordpress Drama" it could get a lot of people interested (as we know)

I've got around this using Wutimes Content blur Now that particular usergroup can see the thread in What's New, and when they click through I allow them to see the first post. Thereafter, all the posts are blurred for them. Seems to be encouraging subscriptions.

That only works if you don’t mind them seeing the first post. If you let them see that why not let them see the rest.

This doesn’t work where users want their posts (including the OP) to not be visible to guests, yet it’s useful for titles to be visible so guests can see there is plenty of action on the forum.

Make this a suggestion

I like to show them the first post, but there is the option to hide every post in the thread.

It absolutely does. You can choose exactly what user group sees threads, guests are a user group too.
