vBulletin 5 screenshots

Styling wise those mockups seem to match xenforo pretty close. However, unless they give existing customers a significant discount I can see more people jumping ship or staying with vb4. I think the upgrade cost will either make or break vb5.

Are you looking at different screenshots than me o_O

"New core architecture for improved search, better performance and easier modifications" <-- This! Does this read to you as a complete rewrite of the ancient vB3 code? If it was, shouldn't it have received some more attention in the PR?

Lol, "improved search" was supposed to be a major feature of VB4, which was rubbish from the get go and it was supposed to be fixed for VB4, but that was apparently shelved
I guess the features for VB4, which never arose, are now going to be in VB5 instead.
Yea, that doesn't inspire confidence at all.

Exactly.
vB5 is the rewrite that should have happened after vB3.
vB4 was just keeping the money coming in.
now that vB customers are upset, they'll try to make a reasonable product.
Sorry. Too late for me.
I am skeptical that vB5 is a "total rewrite". rewrite sounds expensive, IB probably will try to save money.

Search is definitely a sore point in all forum software. I suppose the answer eventually will be in tie-in to an external program, but forum searching has fell far behind what people expect......that is, it does not guess about slight misspellings, it would not find ad_banner if you typed in "ad banner", etc. etc.

That said, XF with ES is MUCH better than my old EE forum. No comparison. My user visits are getting shorter and shorter because folks can actually find what they need.....

I haven't seen any forum with a built in search function that is worth anything.
I use google on my forum.

If vbulletin are to make a comeback looking at the spec list, data to go by and screenshots this is the version that will give them this and do it for them.

If it's a total re-write, looking at the early screenshots I'll say what I said on twitter. "It's looking promising" but I'll remain skeptical until functionality can be tested and feature set explored further. Styling in vb5 and upgrading it should be effortless with the introduction of the additonal.css template, so if we see this in v5, upgrading styles will be quick and easy but this all hinges on functionality and refinement of features and good UI which I'm afraid is where my skepticism lies.

It's all speculation at this point, at this moment in time it's looking promising but i'll remain realistic for that worse case scenario type of thing.

I think vB5 looks promising from the limited screenshots but it is far too soon to tell.

What was your reaction about Vb4 when they first released those impressive screenshots . I gotta admit they seriously fooled me .

But hey i will be waiting for VB 5 to see what's coming.

Firstly they are NOT screenshots as has been mentioned on VB forums, they are mockups. But it's been claimed that the product does actually look quite similar to those mockups.

At this point, the only facts we have are

1. The mockups are indeed pretty.
2. We haven't heard from anyone who has actually seen VB5 functioning, apart from IB staff.

I would say, at this point, yes those mockups are pretty but I am definitely not paying a cent to IB till I have demo-ed the front-end and back-end ACP myself. It does not matter how much discount they offer on "Pre-Sale". I keep telling people the definition of insanity, don't want to do it myself.

Oh, and if you were wondering it's: Insanity: Repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting different results!

I'm amazed people think it looks the same...what have you been drinking?

At the time of my comment? VODKA. Lots of it rofl.

After looking now I see there are quite a few differences, and in fact I don't see it being all that different from VB4. We'll have to see when it comes out however. Did IB release an ETA on that release? Anyone??

I think there are fellows among us that are scared of vB5 becomimg better than XenForo but don't want to admit it. I don't blame them. It's a natural reaction.

I read that vB5 is going to be XF's strongest competitor, but I don't think so, screw vB already. If you follow the development of Burning Board 4, you can tell that this software is going to be the strongest XF competitor. Unlike vB5 it is written from scratch just like XenForo, written in HTML5, has a built-in SEO just like XenForo, copies a lot of things from XenForo, has a lot of features that are currently missing in XenForo and btw its predecessor was voted the best commercial forum software 2011. I honestly fear that I have to move to Burning Board 4 once it's released because I really like XenForo and don't want to move. But at the end of the day you want the very best for your community.

So please Kier, Mike and Ashley, I hope you step up and wipe the floor with Burning Board.

Not at all in my case! I suspect some others feel the same...

A forum is simply the underlying foundation for a community. The community represents 90% of the "wealth" - the software really matters very little in most cases.

I think most forum admins would rather changes as little as possible over the year, despite the "latest and greatest" that one particular forum packages comes up with. Users tend to acclimate to most any decent software.

If VB 5 ends up as a great piece of SW, I would cheer that.....and also not use it (unless I had to). Unless magic is involved, it will take years for the product to stabilize and mature.

Repeat after me - community, community, community and content, content, content. The "look" may impress some designers and admins....and may matter a bit if you are Sony Entertainment, but for most forum admins I don't see it being a big part of the decision.

Reading the various forums the past 24 hours, it is kind of shocking how many people are proclaiming how great vB5 is going to be based upon 3 mockup pics. I think I'll be reserving judgement until I get my hands on it to see the code and kick the tires a bit.

It's probably the same people who buy into a presale offer without actually seeing the product first. :P
