vb5 beta released, and...

[joke]This thread HAS to stay open because Kier's first action if/when he gets back will be to close it. That's when we'll know he's back for good.[/joke]

In some respects, IB got screwed too.
Kinda.
They felt perfectly comfortable letting Ashley go. When Mike (and whoever else of the core team) left, they didn't make an offer to bring him back. When Kier was left manning what was essentially a skeleton of his old crew that built VB 3.7 and saw the writing on the wall, it doesn't seem from the deposition that they acknowledged the problem and made it up to him, but rather waved goodbye as he left as well. Add to this Brisco's now-legendary statement that "only engineers care about about architecture". Then, bam, trying to strangle Xenforo in its infancy.

The lawsuit thread was closed temporarily pending new information about the case. That is because many people look to that thread for real information about the case. Many people watch that thread and receive email notifications, expecting to receive real updates. So I locked it until there are real updates.
Oh but the conspiracy theories!

I'm not a moderator Jake, but in all honesty this thread really doesn't serve much of a purpose but to bad-mouth vBulletin.
I'm of the opinion they do serve a useful purpose. I believe any thread that allows discussion on a certain product adds value to the pool of available information about that product, allowing people to make a better informed and more balanced choice. Another important aspect of allowing discussion of any product is that any possible censorship/power by the company is now taken away. With reduced power over feedback on their products, companies now have an important incentive to make sure that the quality of their product truly improves, or risk increasingly bad publicity on websites other than their own which they can't control.

On the other hand, the information can of course be biased and paint a too negative picture. The competing company therefore should have the opportunity and freedom to defend their product as well. It's from such interaction that customers often learn the most. As always, freedom is the answer. But we must make sure that information is truthful and fair to the competition also. And it would be wise for staff to stay out of the discussion, as they are too involved. It should be customers and coders feedback, from both sides.

This is of course just my humble opinion. It's up to the owners of this business and website to write the rules of their community.

I know when I posted in this thread, it was to give an honest opinion about the vB5 beta and to share an admin demo for others to experience it as well -- nothing bashing IB about that besides personal opinion on the workings of the software itself. It also seems that the first couple of pages managed to stay to that point as well, but it sadly very quickly devolved into a bash fast. The advantage of having a thread related to the performance of the vB5 SOFTWARE on the non-vB boards I feel is important in order to give people looking into purchasing forum software a wide range of opinions on a particular software suite from various viewpoints (if such a thread related to vB5 performance was opened on vbulletin.com -- and many are -- while negatives are indeed present you also see people posting about features that work well for them, etc. which gives another equally important viewpoint on the software). I'd be all for keeping this open to promote discussion on the software itself, but as I know that isn't going to happen, I think this thread is past due for being closed to let the XF community move on to more productive things.

EDIT: Speaking of the admin demo, I think I'm going to take it offline now. If anyone still wants to play around with an admin demo of vB5 and IB hasn't released their own yet, send me a PM.

Seems some people just don't care to hear opinions outside of their own.. Agree or close, those are your options. I have an idea lets limit discussions of various topics relating to forum software on a forum platform designed to promote discussions. ehh on second thought that sounds dumb.

Your implying that no one in this thread has helped other members trouble shoot and solve problems your assumption is wrong.. Not everyone knows all the answers, we help where and when we can... Give it a rest already.. XF will never install a stupid plugin of that nature.. lol you cant even get them to say hello.

never said that no one in this thread never helped or never offered to trouble shoot anything. but its blatantly obvious though, theres few members in that "special clique of ****" only offers help to selective few members though (i had the SAME THREE helping me, that it). (hell, they bend over backwards to help "drama lamas" like David_ that makes site "xenforosucks.com, which main focus is bashing or putting down XF, "let's jump to help him!! yay! but screw new guys like vVv").. the ones they want to reply too, thats it. their "buddies". and it's obvious that crap threads like this get more attention than normal support forum threads in general. its a business/ support forum.. main focus isn't general discussion crap and competitor software site.. It's XF software / support. that should be main focus. otherwise.. turn it into "XF Battle Dome/general discussion" only and drop all the support sections shrug. And the plugin isn't stupid either.. because the main focus should be support FIRST, before random bull**** and competitor software threads.

again, i got help. happy that i got help. it ain't about me never had gotten help. but for lord's sake.. this is new guy (my view of things, and lets argue its opposite here is bs)

PS. Its actually sad though, they can't or couldn't answer some simple basic questions that have been asked repeatedly before, or drop a link to a resource or what-not... But don't know answers to questions.. but can make resources like no tomorrow, or build skins, or develop/code with XF since they've been here. wow, that's sad lmfao

I really would take anything that David_ does with the xenforosucks or vbulletinsucks with a grain of salt. It's admirable, but it's also what I would label as sensational journalism. It is grounded and rooted more in hype than fact or truth.

If there are 1055 post about this VB release, does this mean that there are also 1055 free google hits for VB courtesy this thread?

Probably, but the vast majority are negative in nature...my bet would be that vB would forgo the hits given that they are generally describing the fail that vB 5 connect is in its current incarnation.

I've never heard a weirder explanation. Do you know the meaning of a forum? Since when did XF's sole purpose turn into being an email-notification program?

When people started taking time away from Jake helping actual customers with problems because people don't follow a simple instruction of no off topic talk in that thread.

And what does that have to do with Jake's explanation above? FWIW, nobody forces Jake to be a moderator. If it is taking his time away, as you say, he can always look for another venture.

He closed the thread because he got tired of cleaning it up. Many people use that thread to stay updated on real information about the case. Therefore it was closed so that people could remain subscribed and not receive email notifications about useless spectating, which is what it turned into.

His being a moderator is helping people in the support area. Off topic drama crap isn't needed. I don't understand how you do not understand this. It seems you just want to pick and pick at things if they don't fit your grand idea of how xenForo should be run.

Especially making condescending remarks to someone who has been a part of forums for many years, asking them if they knew what the meaning of a forum was.

I don't mind the talking of competitor software at all. :) But nearing 55 pages deep...
The thread does not serve the same 5-10 posters that you seem to think it does. This thread is big due to to many random people who go to VB.com, look at the demo, and come back here with impressions. That's why the thread is so big. Shutting it down will serve no purpose other than shutting down a major outlet of online frustration about vb5.
