Anybody here remember DOS 4.0?

Sure, among other things...

You see, I am currently attempting to recall EVERYTHING I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED, to distract myself from the Forum from the Black Lagoon.

We were already considering invasion of the human population, I suppose this only seals the deal.

Wow, when did DP get so hot? lol

I just don't get the inline replies. I mean if an inline reply is new on page 1 and there are new posts on page 10, do I miss out on the inline reply on page 1?

Not sure how that "connects" the community more than what they had before...

They'll probably connect posts from different times into one single monolithic 'latest replies' section. Only once you go into a specific post would you see that, oh, it was a reply to something posted 4 years ago.

Not sure how that improves on the traditional thread structure, other than I guess while reading the 4-year-old post, you'd right away see it having a reply posted last week. Dunno, it's both convenient and confusing. People like simple and direct lists, not confusing nestings and sub-sub-sub categories.

Interesting.
I think the comment stays with the post.
and I suspect it won't cause the thread to be "unread" and appear in What's new.

For Xenforo, I'd want the comments to trigger an alert to the OP.

I think this is fine, the WHOLE POINT of inline comments is that it doesn't meet the threshold of making a new reply. People should REPLY to the post if they think their reply applies to the entire thread. If they are just commenting on one post, they can inline comment.

Inline (intra-post) commenting would help reduce Thread SPRAWL. SUPER long thread become useless, quickly and this will help protect against this VERY IMPORTANT problem.

I've talked about Inline commenting at xenforo.com over the years and that it is a good idea. I think Xenforo should consider it.

robdog, you don' t like inline (intra-post) commenting ? Why ?

You seen the prices:

Buy a license: $249.00

Update from VBulletin 4: $200.00

If someone wanted VB5. Sell VB4 for about £70 get some cash, then just buy a license, not worth upgrading for $200 and just getting one license.

Tbh I just sold my last VB license and I wont be going back on their members area it's crap.

Xenforo should sue them for using the same menu idea as Xenforo. Dont forget they've used the same forums on left something like sidebars etc on the right.

Total XenForo and IBP Rip.

Same Notices idea as Xenforo as-well.

is the same!

I'm at college using the library. These fools are still using IE7 at the library... Anyway, I tried clicking on that link and it took several minutes to load and when it finished loading the site looked jacked up. My site also looks odd in IE7 as well but nowhere near as bad or slow. So what's the stance on IE 7 these days? Totally abandoned by forum developers?

IPB is a nice piece of software. They've done an exceptional job on piecing together a product solution in parts, allowing a person to pick and choose. The only problem is that it's also bloated and very resource intensive. You would be better off running Joomla 2.5 and XF than their CMS + Forum product, as an example. The cost would hurt if the site became large.

Their backend is pretty tidy as well. Like anything... you get used to it from using it.

My philosophy is that a blank software should be fast, responsive and stable. Nobody wants boring default, so you need room to add third party features. IPB struggles in this area unfortunately. The default product is resource intensive, but manageable I guess. When you start adding features, you want to be prepared for a dedicated server much earlier than say VB3.x or XF software, either one using Joomla 2.5 as a CMS. Wordpress is a huge resource hog now too, unfortunately.

This is what I like about XF. The raw product is so damn fast, it's a rare software package. You then have room to add lots of features without killing yourself at the server. I had it working on a single core with 400k posts and 5k visitors daily, with moderate features. I've only recently had to shift it to a dedicated, though I can now add more features because I have craploads of headroom at the server, with a higher post count and nearing 7k daily visitors, and the server is humming along with 600 online, no great deal... packed with features.

I suspect if I was still using VB4.x, my current server would be bordering unhealthy trying to dredge the software along, in conjunction with all the third party features, let alone VB5.x. People will be needing massive server upgrades if they upgrade their 4.x site from the way that software performed when I viewed the demo. Yuk!
I'm at college using their slow computers and IE7 browser at the library. This website loads very fast so your definitely right about that.

DOS 4 = Microsoft Bob = Microsoft ME = Microsoft Vista = vBulletin, try to stay on topic! :)
I think I just figured they talk about versions of Windows to say that we must evolve, but there may be as many versions + or less the only thing that does not change is the MS-DOS ;)

Beta? Based on what I saw, I'd have called it "alpha." It may be good when it finally leaves beta/RC status, but I'm not liking what I'm seeing. We've been with vB since 3.0, and I think I came on board as admin just before I upped us to 3.5.

Can't say I'm angry. Disappointed though? Definitely. I expected better.
remember VB3.x.x was made by the two fantastic XenForo owners ;D And Ashley was the Business Manager.
