Add-on Users able to ignore "Alert users"?

We want to inform our users about advertising related offers via Alert users funtion in Admin CP.

Obviously some users don't want these alerts and find them intrusive so we are trying to figure out a way to give users ability to ignore these alerts.

I'm pretty sure by default there is no option to ignore admin alerts like for emails sent by the administrator (Receive site mailings in privacy settings) ?

One solution would be to use custom user field (eg. enable admin alerts) but it would have to be enabled by default to use it as user criteria. It's not possible to enable custom user field checkbox by default, right?

This would be the route to go down. The default value for a checkbox is off so you’d just word it accordingly. If you wanted everyone to be opted in by default then you would make the wording of the checkbox “Do not receive admin alerts”. Then create a user group and promotion for those who do not wish to receive alerts then use that in the Alert criteria.
