    I wish to use this feature... mainly to distinguish the relevant staff.. particularly in the sidebar..

    However, how can I disable the styling and just show the forum default user name colour in the message elements in threads ?

    Code:
    .messageUserBlock a.username
    You may have to use !important.

    No reason that shouldn't work, especially with the !important. Mind sharing a link to a post with usergroup styling on it?

    Try this:

    .messageUserBlock a.username span,
    .messageUserBlock a.username {
    color: #c58917 !important;
    }
