UK Online Safety Regulations and impact on Forums

Thank you. I found custom user fields a bit mind boggling - I read somewhere on here that they can't be fully deleted afterwards (in case I get it wrong!), So would that show up before the registration form or afterwards?

Just trying to think of the best way to handle new users right now. I have the url spam filter set to first 5 posts, I have the AI content moderator. Some people join and never post (just read articles). I'm not keen on the idea of manually moderating first 3 posts or whatever, because often people join up with an urgent question (pet health related). They don't want to be sitting in a manual approval queue for hours. Also presumably, that wouldn't stop a new user making a signature or avatar or adding something to a profile (although I have edit profile set to no).

So a "vetting" process could be quite useful (but also slow genuine new users up a bit). Just trying to find a balance.

On the registration form.

Here's one of mine (note the regex is optional, this just disallows links)

(Field id is required, you just need to make something up)

Thank you. So it just becomes part of the registration page then? So if they are then manually approved, do you get to see what they've written in the manual approval queue?

I had a look at your registration form etc, if you don't mind, and it's very impressive. Assume that is custom styling :-) So if I wanted to add a tick box for age, how would you do that on a custom user field?

Also - apologies for all the questions, but if you have auto registration, rather than manual approval - where can admin/moderator view what they've written in their piece on the registration form?

The opening page is from the Paid Registration addon

Thank you very much - much appreciated. I assume display order is the order on the registration page? Also is this editable after saving, if a mistake is made? That might sound like a silly question but I wouldn't want to be stuck with something I had got wrong! Having read that deleting a user custom field can have issues (if that is correct).

Also - this might sound like another silly question. With auto registration, they have to click on an emailed link to complete registration. Which weeds out the ones without real email address. With manual approval - presumably their email address is never tested in this way. They just enter it and go to manual approval. (Even if Cloudflare Turnstile has approved them). So auto registration presumably adds another checking layer (even if they then still go into manual approval for first post or whatever).

When I first started the site, I mainly just used default settings. Only needed to add Cloudflare turnstile earlier this year. So I'm thinking some things through from scratch now.

Yes. And you can't resort it I think so if it's a long list best to get it right from the start.
Also is this editable after saving,
Yes. But not the ID

I'll leave that for someone more knowledgeable to answer.

I think so but you could always send an email. On another forum (Residents Association) I have manual approval and I ask them to ring me so I know they are a human and are a resident. Old school.

Another question :-) If I have first message going for manual approval. And also have the spam filter to send the first 5 messages (if they contain a link or spam words) to manual approval. Which system overrides the other/kicks in first? Just wondering if it would cause any conflicts. Eg if the first message contained a link it would go to manual approval as well as going to manual approval for being a first message.

I don't think it matters.

It has the same result for both/either action whether it's spam phrase or permissions

Speaking of groups. As all my former members have just joined up they are all technically new users. I've already manually put them in a second user group, but I want them to be able to bypass the spam checking. Now I can't add that to the second user group as that is specifically just for voting in competitions and someone could reach that group before having had five posts (it's a time based thing rather than a number of posts based thing).

I can't quite see how I could do a new usergroup for them to bypass spam settings, when they're all new members. And doing invidual permissions for them would be a lot of people to do invidual permissions for. Any ideas?

It's a situation whereby they are technically new members but are all trusted former members.

Either that or I could just tell them to expect a post to go for manual approval if it has a link in it, but I'd rather not do that.

Anyway the Hamster Forum is back online and running. Now only has 31 members - all but 3 of whom are former members - who are very pleased it's running again. Had about 850 before but only really about 20 that posted regularly.

Of course it's all over the internet that it closed down. But managed to get a couple of google search results removed.

That's good! Enjoy it while it's small.

Need to get my spam settings right! It is doing something I didn't expect. I turned it down to just check the first two posts, but a former member's first post didn't send and they got this message

"Oops! We ran into some problems. Your content can not be submitted. This is likely because your content is spam-like or contains inappropriate elements. Please change your content or try again later. If you still have problems, please contact an administrator."

That shouldn't be happening. I have it set to send any posts with spam phrases to manual approval. I think I'll just turn it off and install Ozzie's spaminator. I never used to get any spam anyway after using Cloudflare Turnstile. Maybe one a week in the approval queue. But of course xxx's law would be that I would get some when the site has just reopened!

The member in question was replying to a welcome message by direct message (it's the only dm contact - to reply to admin). The feedback I got was they wrote quite a long message.
