It's great - I have it. And he's very good to deal with :-)

I was waiting for that to be finished before I re-opened the site .........it scans hyperlinks now as well. And also scans DM's if you want it to. Edit - mine is specifically for the illegal harms in the act - there may be other versions.

I can't remember what the default settings were in spam management, before I changed them. If anyone knows? Edit - checked on the demo.

A bit more about how useful this is - assuming it's the illegal harms version ......

Aside from all the functions, it very much helps to meet criteria for a Child Risk Assessment in addition to a general risk assessment. It enables you to say you have 24/7 moderation for illegal harms, swift take down, pre-moderation (if you tick the box for removal before suspect links are actually posted) as it sends things to the approval queue (if you select that), and "Enhanced moderation". All of which helps class as "Low Risk" via the criteria.

I tested it out with a few things while the site was offline (in a private node) - photos of guns, talk about killing, stroppy posts (eg with an attitude and "you're stupid" on the end.). All were sent for manual moderation and flagged with "weapons" or "bullying and harrassment". Didn't want to test for more serious illegal stuff obviously, but that was enough for me to see it worked well.

I think it's very good. Mine has the list of illegal harms in the list of things to scan for. You can add other things to that (although it might remove more than you want then - haven't tested that fully). Eg if you add Instagram to the list, it'll send any post with an Instagram link for pre-moderation (but might also send a post that mentions Instagram in it and no link).

It's clever that it scans photos and detects a gun eg. In addition to the link scanning and option to scan direct messages.

It's not cheap, but I felt it was worth it. To easily meet a risk assessment and not worry about spam as much.

The other thing that counts as "Enhanced moderation" for a CRA is the Crowd moderation addon (aka user take down).

Two things about enhanced moderation. If you have it, you're more likely to class as low risk for a CRA. If you class as medium risk for a CRA, I think you're required to have enhanced moderation, including hyperlink scanning and user take down.

Yes. My original version was just photo and text scanning. The updated version includes scanning of hyperlinks - plus a tick box option to scan DM's as well.

It is very expensive, additionally presumably you also pay open AI (or whatever) per scan.

I'm also concerned about the environment impact of AI:

The Open AI costs have been cents so far. Very inexpensive. My theory being that it probably won't get used that much as hopefully it won't need to remove any illegal harms! Or very rarely anyway.

I wasn't aware of the environmental impact, but AI seems pretty much here to stay by the look of it.

Just checked and I've paid 10 cents so far, for 188 requests/checks. It's a pay as you go system in that you top up with what credits you want and then top up again if it gets low. I put £30 on initially, and at this rate it should last a good few years!

Edit - having said that, the hyperlink scanning will get used even if the text and image detection isn't used much, because I believe it scans all links as a way of detecting if any have flags in. Hence it's now 10cents. For a very large forum though, the costs may add up a bit.

Also, while it's an expensive addon, it's a heck of a lot cheaper than age verification software costs.

I did notice their privacy policy could be a useful example of a GDPR compliant privacy policy (although maybe Germany has additional requirements as it seems quite extensive). Do we really need to do all that?

You probably could add a page that is really super important that explains the whole thing and add the translations for those who are accessing it from other countries.
Then also add the UK law that you're trying to abide by as well.

Thank you. That isn't actually my site but it's an idea :-)
