Thesaurus vs Dictionary

Lately I've been enjoying flipping through Roget's thesaurus; and, I find it extremely helpful in improving my English. Sometimes I get tired of the way dictionaries explain words' meaning and usage. Often times it's watery-wordy and in some cases irritating [Longman Contemporary English Dictionary]. I take delight in using Oxford American Dictionary though. Do you find referencing to synonyms and antonyms more convenient than reading through explanation?

Not really, there's uses for both of them

I mean when I read and encounter a new English word in the text, I now prefer to first grab thesaurus and quickly get an idea what that word means instead of going through dictionary explanation.
