I just finished asking that the smiley posts be split off to their own thread. When the whole last page of a thread is not about the topic at hand I think that something is wrong. This thread is spiralling.
Did you report it? Gotta bring it to someones attention, then it'll be split. (hopefully)I just finished asking that the smiley posts be split off to their own thread.
Nope. I sent them a message on a paper airplane, should get it sometime next month.Did you report it? Gotta bring it to someones attention, then it'll be split. (hopefully)
Let's just say I know a few and none of them is a unfriendly place or run by nazi admins. One example would be stackoverflow.com (+ all of its sister sites) - probably one of the best place for software developers you can find with lots of high quality content on programming and other "tech" topics. Granted, its not like a traditional forum and they don't use a typical forum software, but the place has a lot in common with a forum community. Not a site I would ever visit, I find the more "professional" a forum site touts it's self as being the more it is run by a humourless self important dictator.
To be fair, I did not theorize any correlation between gender and graphical emoticonsBut of course, each to their ownI won't be out there lobbying for all sites to have to have smilies, or insisting that anyone holding the opinion that smilies are frivollous or "girly" be hung drawn and quartered...

Does your current idea vary or change from what we have already discussed months ago?Trust me, if xenforo ever does implement the kind of smiley manager I envision it'll blow your socks off. You'll never want to use popups, dropdown menus to get to your smiley listings. I would say my idea does kill 2 birds with one stone, but it kills a whole flock.![]()
Gods.. where to begin with this sexist little piece.
It has absolutely nothing to do with being "girls" The biggest and loudest complainers when we changed smilies one time on our tech site were men!
I specifically said that smilies might not be important to Tech or Geek sites (clearly you only visit such sites) and yes it can distract from anything serious. But I put it to you that the amount of "Forums" that are super-serious-boring-no-smilies-allowed-or-you-might-actually-enjoy-yourself-and-that-is-NOT-ALLOWED-here!!! Kind of sites is probably the vast Minority, not at all the Majority.
The sites I have owned or helped admin over the years that form the basis of my years of experience range from Technical Programming sites through to Company sites, chat sites and many serious hobby sites for both men and women, I can tell you from my experience that every single one of them used and loved the smilies, and most were begging for more smilies, some even pay to have specialist smilies made for their particular area of interest.
Forums are predominately not news sites, so your examples are spurious, nor are they dry boring content only sites, websites serve that purpose so much better... the very nature of forums is that they are communities of people often with a common interest, and often a huge part of what makes them successful is the interactions of the members, and the sense of community they build, a key part of which is the communications between members.. such communications are greatly aided by ...... you guessed it.... Smilies!
The fact you see no purpose or value in smilies doesn't make your viewpoint valid for the vast majority of Forums, and of Admins...... regardless of gender![]()

I don't think I covered my thoughts on import/export with you, so remind me at some point.
I'll let you in a little secret, it's fine to disagree with someone's opinion but to dismiss their views totally and substitute them for your own reality is an indication of a closed mind. Just to clarify, I am not saying you are closed minded per say. I make decisions that governs billions of dollars worth of assets everyday and one of the keys to my success is the fact that I value people's opinions (men & women) no matter how far off from mine they are. There are few things in this world that we are entitled to. One of them is your opinion and if you value your entitlement of an opinion you need to value others.
I can't believe I am saying this....but to clarify my position on smilies (this is taken from my original post) "I do use smilies, they are a great way to convey body language. However, I do find them distracting but again they do have their place."
One more thing in closing, for someone that is a self proclaimed online authority before you share an opinion you need listen (or in this case read) to others sharing theirs. You indicated "The fact you see no purpose or value in smilies" simply is not the case. I may have missed something and could be wrong. In your defense, I may have accidentally encouraged an emotional response which may have caused some inaccuracy on your part. The reference to "girls" is my way (or based on my area of origin) of casually speaking. Example, my wife will say to me "I'm going out with the girls for coffee", or I will say "the boys are coming over this weekend to help with the deck" or "the boys and I are going riding on Sunday" THE REALITY "can I PLEASE go riding with the boys on Sunday?". To offend in that way was not my intention and I sincerely apologize![]()
There there, it's alright dear, I didn't mean to offend you... but you see I am big and important in the real world, with my job where I govern billions of dollars worth of assets... so whilst I will indulge your opinion, clearly I am still right and you are closed minded for not agreeing with me, and furthermore here's a couple of patronizing and belittling comments about you personally and your experience, to put you in your place.
What would be totally and completely awesome, is if we could somehow assign a set of smilies to a certain style.
Ex: you have a light and a dark style.
The light style has it's own set of smilies and the dark style has its own set of smilies.
Now that would impress me to no end.
