Call me pessimistic but I do believe that something is going to happen in 2012 and I do believe it will significantly alter the evolution of humanity. This could be in the form of an ELE but is probably something else. I hope for disclosure and public first contact because I believe we're ready for it, and that it is absolutely necessary for our race to finally wake the hell up.

That said, we all have to accept that Earth is dying. It is common fact that one day, she'll either explode or implode. Long before that though, we're going to have to move on into the stars. Humanity is growing too quickly and I highly doubt that our natural resources are going to sustain us as a race much longer. We need to explore the galaxy and find new stars to call home.

{On a side note, I intend to hijack the first Starship we build if it has some sort of star-drive, hyper-drive, jump-drive, warp-drive, or any variation thereof. I'll either succeed or die trying. I've already got a 30-person assault team [friends can be useful he-he]. By the way, attached is a pretty cool 3D picture of what a star-ship may look like.}
Earth will not just explode or implode on a whim. An explosion would require an external force, such as a gigantic meteor the size of, say, Texas or something. Implosion is virtually impossible, too. Even the super-eruptions of massive volcanos many millions of years ago were not enough to destroy the planet.

Earth will survive humanity, artificial and natural destruction and long periods of heating and cooling. It went 4.87 billion years without us and it can get along with us, too. It's the Sun that will ultimately destroy Earth.

But ... it will explode none the less.
Not quite. Scientists don't believe the Sun is large enough to explode, or form a supernova. What will more likely happen is the Sun will expand into a red giant, then slowly shrink and cool into a black dwarf. Only the largest, most massive stars explode in supernovas.

This reminds me of a skit by George Carlin, on a quite similar topic. (link)

I don't know if the Mayan calendar ends in 2012 will signal the end of the world. Their calendar ended there because they got conquered.

No, that was when their 13th (then current) epoch ended. The fact they got conquered by the Spanish circa the 1520s or so has nothing to do with it.
