[TH] Social Groups [Deleted]

man this plugin looks great. i'm testing it right now and i just wanted to point out two things:

1. there seems to be an issue with the layout and the taigachat plugin. my page looks like this:

chatbroke.webp

do you know if this has to do with the plugin or the theme? i haven't had any problems with taigachat yet.

2. it seems there's a problem with the preview button when creating a social forum:

previewbroke.webp
i'm guessing maybe the button has no function?

anyways, small stuff, no worries, i'm pretty excited about this plugin, thanks for providing it to us :)

So what exactly does this mod do? I'd like my members to be able to form "groups"with a common interest. Does this allow that?

I have what I think is a bug report. The behavior of Xenforo's "Mark Forums Read" link on the header is to mark all of the forums anywhere on the site read. However...

1) The link will not mark social forums read. (This might be intentional...?) (EDIT: This assessment is based on the names of the social forums staying bold when viewed from the listing in the social category.)

2) If the link is clicked while viewing the page for the social category, an error "The requested forum could not be found" will be displayed. This error does not occur if you are viewing the page for one of the social forums within the social category, only for viewing the social category itself.

I can't get this error to go away by changing any options, and I've not modified the add-on in any way. If you can't replicate the error, I'll play around with the options to see if it's a specific scenario that is causing the issue.

EDIT:

I believe I know why it happens. In a normal subforum, clicking "Mark Forums Read" pops up a window asking if you want to mark all forums or just the current forum (by name). But this fails to work correctly in the social category because the page currently being used is NOT a forum, and so when it tries to look up the name of the current forum it fails because that is impossible.

Another bug, I think. Disallowing non-members of a social group to see the members seems to only disallow them to look at the members page; the members box in the sidebar still displays anyway. I've tested it with a bunch of permission combinations. It seems that the permissions check is operating correctly with the exception of that side box, which appears to always be showing.

Works fine on my test installation. A social category is designed to behave exactly like a forum in a lot of ways, and this is one of those ways.

Can you try and replicate on a clean installation of XenForo, or perhaps with other add-ons disabled?

@Waindigo Private Social Groups - I am not sure what this is meant for but we setup a social group with the following options.

I don't see the point in using any of these settings as it does not matter how you set it up anyone can post and reply in the social group. So why would the member worry about asking to join the social group if they can create threads and reply to threads anyway. What I would have expected here is if it was closed as in open not selected the member should not be able to view the content of that group until they join and have been accepted.

On the same note even open social groups members should not be able to post in them until they joined that group?

Or am I missing something here.

In fact I just noticed now that a normal registered member not even being a member of the group can change the group settings?

I don't have any of the default permissions set for a normal member as yet found in the settings option.

My normal usergroup permissions are like this

ScreenHunter_19 Jun. 10 13.28.webp

ScreenHunter_20 Jun. 10 13.30.webp

So here we have a normal registered member who is not a member of this group and they can still post

ScreenHunter_21 Jun. 10 13.32.webp

The Social forum has been setup like this

ScreenHunter_22 Jun. 10 13.33.webp

Here we have the non member of that group posting a new thread into it?

ScreenHunter_23 Jun. 10 13.35.webp

The normal registered member is also able to reply to threads of members of that group even if they are notr a member of that group

Please check out this guide:
http://xenforo.com/community/resources/setting-up-your-first-social-category-guide.1876/

This should make it clear how you can set it up so regular users can't post but only members can.

Ok I have followed this but it still seems I am having issues, it is now setup like this

The Social Node
Capture1.webp

Node Permissions (registered member)
Capture2.webp

Social Permissions (Options)

Capture3.webp

The Issues are these
  1. Member joins social group but cannot see any new threads and posts when doing a New Post Search
  2. Member does not get notifications of any new threads or post in that area
Capture4.webp

As you can see below Strawbs is a member of this group has posted and the group is marked as watched for him

I tried, and now I can't replicate it. I'll keep an eye on it and see if it happens again. It was very consistent and persistent last night, but today it doesn't seem to be misbehaving.

I just don't see the point of this add-on. It the same exact thing as my current forum, except it allows users to create forums. So it's just a forum within a forum. This is redundant. Make a true member group add-on, with it's own pages and sections like Better Blogs, and I'd even pay for it...

Perhaps you don't see the point because it does not fulfill your needs, but it fulfills a need that over 500 downloaders have had by providing a feature that is not included in Xenforo.

Well I see the point and and it is a nice concept as it is set out now but if it does not work the way it should then I agree it is redundant

I guess a lot of people like to have forums inside forums. lol
