XF 1.2 Switching on 'Full Friendly URLs' mid-stream

I've been running my sites without 'Full Friendly URLs' enabled. I never thought much of it but it's just been brought to my attention that this would probably be a beneficial feature to use. I tried switching it on as a test on one of my forums but it appears that this kills any existing links/URLs in the old format. Is there a way to accommodate both URLs via htaccess while using Full Friendly URLs going forward?

All important routes (e.g. forums, threads, attachments, members) are canonicalized in the controller, so redirects from non-friendly to friendly are automatic.
