So I guess Post Icons are officially dead?

I think I fall firmly into the RIP post icons camp. I prefer the avatar and hopefully thread prefixes. Post icons are generally just clutter, rarely used IME. If you really want them, maybe provide an option to enable smilies in the thread title? I'd really rather have the thread title all be text though as it's more semantic, better for folks with text readers and SE bots.

Looks like post icons are dead. I absolutely did not see the point of "hot" thread icons, as I can tell a popular thread from the post count or view count.

As for threads I've posted in, hmm. I guess there are other visual cues.

The Xen developers can do much better then this. :)

Will there be any way an admin might be able to mark a thread? yes/no, good/bad, green/red, anything? I use the icons all the time in private forums to keep track of threads I need to address later on, sort of like unresolved/resolved for tickets.

I used them every day to determine which threads I've posted in. I know I can use subscriptions, but I don't subscribe to every thread.

I think you're thinking of the thread icons, not the post icon. The post icon would be the smiley shown next to the thread title.

... but, yes, I also rely upon the 'dot icons' to see which threads I've posted in.

I personally like post icons. If they weren't present, I'd likely code them in. People who like them would be prompted to post them and would see them next to threads, and those who don't like them wouldn't hear or see them. But a lot of users enjoy setting a tone for a thread with a particular icon. it's part of net culture.

There should be some way to see what threads you have posted in. Not necessarily trough post icons.
This is coming.

I will really miss a way to mark the threads somehow, I've been using icons but any way to mark the threads as an admin would work. Perhaps I need to re-think how our forums are set up. Maybe I could live with subforums like this.
  • Needs attention threads
  • Completed threads
Tagging or prefixes would work to in lieu of the icons.

These are two separate things. "Post icons" refers to putting a smilie face or question mark icon in front of the thread title. Seeing if you have posted in a thread or not are part of "thread status icons" or "dot icons".

Neither really seems to be needed on the default theme.

And it is easy to create a theme that doesn't require those images, just by using CSS and styling things a certain way.
