XF 2.3 Smilies - why so complicated?

Hi all, or am I too thick in the head?

We created a second forum, and I'm trying to copy the emojis from our first forum to the news one. I downloaded those folders and uploaded them to overwrite the ones on the new forum. But I don't see change. And the export function does not do anything. I thought I'd get an XML file but nothing opens.

I remember not being able to do this easily the first time either. Smilies? Emojis? Reactions? What's the difference (especially Smilies and Emojis) and where/how do I load new ones to replace the default ones?

Thanks,

Andre

Smilies are images represented by shortcodes and are used express emotions / feelings within the body text of a content (forum post, etc.)
Usually smilies are inerted into forum posts by typing in the code or using a toolbar icon from the editor.
The codes are not standardized, eg. the same code could display different images (or not at all if the code is not defined) on every forum.
The admin can modify smilie definitions - or delete all of them.
XenForo ships a few standard smilie definitions, the images use for thos are from Joypixels.

Emojis are special unicode characters and are used express emotions / feelings within the text of a content (forum post, etc.), titles, etc. - they usually can be used pretty much everywhere (unless speficically limited).
Unlike smilies, emojis are usually inserted by using native (virtual) keyboard functionality, especially on smartphones.
Emojis are standardized, eg. every device / software that supports a certain unicode version can display the same emojis, but the artwork used by devices may differ slightly, to overcome this XenForo defaults to use 3rty party images (again from Joypixels).
XenForo also allows (if enabled) to insert emjois via the smilies toolbar icon of the editor, it also supports converting emoji shortcodes to emojis.

Reactions?
Reactions are images (often correlating to Emojis) to express emotions / feelings about a content as whole.
Each reaction can add a positive, neutral or nagative score to the total reation score of the content owner.
XenForo ships with 6 basic reactions (Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, Angry) which can be mdified by the admin.
Again, XenForo uses JoyPixels for the images.

You can't replace emojis as they are standardized (see above).
But you can modify smilies as you see fit.

To export smlies from one system to another:
  1. Export the smilies from the source system ACP as XML, this will (well, at least it should) trigger a download
  2. Copy the files from the source system to the destination system
  3. Import the XML generated in step 1)
Done.

Thank you for the thorough explanation. :)

Why is it then when I click Export, then select the smilies I want to export, that when I click EXPORT nothing happens. What am I missing?

EDIT: I just saw that I then have to scroll all the way down to see the EXPORT button. That's not something I did before.

I would check to see if it actually DID work, just skipping the dupes. If you are CHANGING those, then maybe erase the old ones before importing.

Skipping yes, but I still had to add them manually, uploading them one by one. Despite seeing them clearly in the folder on my server. Mystery!

Thank you for responding, that was helpful. :)
