Google has been showing "success" in downloading the sitemap regularly, yet Google Webmaster's page shows zero indexed pages.

1. The sitemap only gives Google a list of links you would like crawled by googlebot. Whether Google indexes them is an entirely different matter.
2. How long ago did you submit your sitemap? Google has a ton of computing power but also millions of sites toi index so these things are far from instantaneous.

It's been about a year and a half since I went to XF 1.5.
My forum has been online since 1996 and had previously been extremely well indexed while it was on VB3.x.

Things have changed a lot with what and how search engines index sites, of course, but did you use the XF redirection option after importing from vBulletin?

I looked at this option and it says: "appropriate .htaccess file must be in place.". Do you have an example of an appropriate .htaccess file that would enable this?
It should already be in place, but it will only work automatically if you're using Apache as your web server, and that has mod_rewrite enabled.
If you are using Apache and there is no htaccess file, you just need to rename this file to
