Is it possible to search for particular values in custom fields

I wouldn't necessarily say that.
You can search for users by custom user field values in the Admin CP. The content search system itself doesn't store custom field values for content such as media and resources, but theoretically it could in the future.
I'm not even sure it has been suggested before for either MG or RM but that would be a good catalyst for future inclusion of the feature.
