XF 1.5 Revisiting the 1hr session timeout issues..

I've seen some chatter on this a few years ago and was wondering where things stand today. I basically upped the time in session.php but then found when hourly cleanup cron ran it dropped a lot of 'online' counts which made the online counts seem too erratic (i keep online counts in my header). To try to work around this I've set the cron to run once daily. I'm monitoring things to see what this does. How bad of an idea is this? I have a dedicated 16core server with plenty of resource. What problems should I look for? I don't really care if someone shown last online isn't accurate. Thanks
