XF 1.4 restricting signature problem

So I have a paid subscription usergroup where members get signature ability. I just found out that if that subscription is over and they lose that usergroup they still keep the signature because there is no on/off permission, only edit. So they keep the signature but they just can't edit it. Any ways other than a template conditional to handle this?

Is it possible to have the system trim the signature to the max allowable length for the given usergroup?

I'm thinking that one could add "delete signature SQL code" when the user is moved from paid to non-paid group.
