rescue xbmc.org

MyBB and phpBB3 are great projects.
They just aren't ideal for xbmc.org
Time could very well show they are far less then ideal.
I think they basically get free "unlimited" hosting so they don't care about performance.

Here is a quote from the man himself:

jmarshall: We're not interested in new features at this point (though no doubt some will crop up). We're primarily interested in a free and open source solution. Using closed software doesn't fit in with XBMC's philosophy, so that's the primary motivator (plus vbulletin by all accounts is a pain in the arse).

The biggest aim of the transistion is to try and minimize breakage. Expect some to happen - after all, it keeps life interesting, right?

Cheers, Jonathan

MyBB good for Big Boards ?
Anyone feel that is off ?

No..... I've seen plenty of big boards use free open source forums.

Plus it's their decision, let them choose what they want to.

I used MyBB 1.6 for 2 years. I liked it to be honest and is the best of the FREE boards. The last release made, or next to last was a big one, it had lots of fixes included to try and clear everything up with the current stable version before working full steam ahead on the newer MyBB 2. Don't think you'll see that many more update releases made of MyBB 1.6 now prior to MyBB 2 coming out in the future.

Not sure I would choose MyBB 1.6 over vBulletin 3 though. Mainly because it will be obsolete when MyBB 2 comes out and I don't think you can upgrade either from "one to the other". So if they go MyBB 1.6 now, they could well be stuck with using it even after MyBB 2 arrives. So you might as well use vBulletin 3, same board with more features and power and can be used indefinitely costing you nothing on updates. MyBB 1.6 will most likely end-up in the same situation vB3 is in now anyway, when MyBB 2 comes out.

They'd be better waiting until MyBB 2 arrives, but it could be a good while off.

Seems a strange choice to me, I don't understand the logic either, it's like cutting your nose off to spite your face. I mean couldn't they hold fire for a while and save up to buy a commercial product, or ask for reader donations for this? However as people have said, it's their choice, they have their reasons. But to my eyes, MyBB does not look modern and it does not look better than vB3.

Just been reading that post and replies made on XBMC. They make no bones that they want to use Open Source only. They've made their mind up on that.

Pretty impressed with MyBB @xbmc.org. It feels quite fast. Their hosting package is probably crazy expensive and maybe that is what is responsible for the site's peppiness.

da-anda's migration was extremely impressive. The guy has major skills.

Overall, at best the move from vB3 to MyBB is sideways.
I'm probably biased but Xenforo would have been a better choice.

I've always liked MyBB, and it has the advantage of having been around quite a bit longer than XenForo, so it's had a bit more time to see what works and what doesn't work.

I remember the earliest versions got into some hot water for using some vB2 source code, though.

MyBB - is a great choice for shared hosting, which is what I ran it on. Run's very fast and stays running fast even when lots of people are listed online. Never had issues using it until my server host changed PHP version one day and things started going wrong with it not being compatible, due to me using an older version of MyBB I spent 12 months modding the life out off. So could no longer update it to latest version to fix those incompatible code things, otherwise I would have stayed with using it most likely.

I ran it longer than any other forum before too, nearly 2 years.

Actually, it feels like it's running quite slow to me. It ran faster than that on my shared hosting than it appears to be running there.
