XF 1.5 Redirecting old forum node url to new forum node url

I edited the URLs of some of my forum nodes to try and optimise them better for SEO.

After doing a search, I found the old node indexed, followed the link and was surprised to find it give me an error.

Does XF not redirect old node urls to new node URL similar to how it does it when you change thread titles?

If not, what's the best way of make sure old indexed links redirect properly? Just popping a 301 redirect in the .htaccess and maintaining a list manually?

If you are referring to the URL portion, it does state that changing it will break the old URL.

Code:
If entered, the URL to this forum will not contain an ID. Use a-z, 0-9, _, and - characters only.
Note that once specified, changing this value will cause URLs to be broken.
You will need to set up specific rewrites in the .hatccess file.
