Is there a way to increase the number of items displayed on the "Recent Activity" screen before one has to click the "Show older items" button?

That is controlled by the News Feed Items to Fetch With Each Request option, which can be located under the News Feed option group.

You must remove the max=50 value from the Format Parameters when editing that option. But your forum must be on debug mode for that though.
