While it might seem like nitpicking for you, this is a technical detail of importance. Borders are assigned to elements, and when you're trying to get rid of them, you could spend ages when you're trying at the wrong place. There's also the difference between borders, box-shadows (which can also appear to be borders) and outlines, but that's just another layer of details.
We've basically gone for something similar to this which should solve any perceived issue here (really, it was as designed, but this is neater and more consistent with our other "quick" form: the thread quick reply).
