XF 2.2 PWA icon update

After changing PWA icons via the admin panel, will the already installed apps get updated automatically? or do they have to re-install the PWA app?

They will get the new icons, though it's not really something you have control over. It is done at the app-level (or potentially by Google itself in some scenarios) and involves some periodic checking.

Note that I'm not positive about this, but you may find the icons are retrieved somewhat more quickly if you move them to a different URL as this would more explicitly signal new files.
