how to edit default profile field?

specifically the location i want to make it a Drop down selection type
i also want to set the occupation to required during registration

ACP > Users > Custom User Fields and select the occupation one and press General Options and alter the settings there.

As for location, I removed mine but if you cannot edit it to a drop down then make a new one for location and on the Field Type use 'Drop down selection' then fill in the 'Options for Choice Field' for the drop down items.

I am not at my forum but I think that should work for you.

These are built-in fields and cannot be changed.
