XF 1.2 Prevent Unwanted Emails

I definitely do not want my site constantly sending site emails to my users, as it is considered junk and may prevent my users from wanting to return. A member recently messaged me and told me that whenever he receives a new message, he receives a notification in his email even though he has email alerts shut off.

Is there any way I can disable emails like these from being sent out while keeping the necessary ones (account confirmation and all that jazz) being sent to users? Or am I just completely screwed?

You change change the default settings in "User Registration" options. However, given that you've tagged this as 1.2, the user should have a link to quickly stop receiving all notification emails from threads they watch.
