Points are useless without anything to spend it on.

I want a points system so bad but I don't see the point if you can't purchase anything with it or gamble it away. Ya'll have no idea how much I miss playing blackjack in andrew's casino mod when I was on vb4 (waindigo charged me $1500 to develop that but I don't have that kinda money) If I lost real bad I could use the points market system to steal members points who did not buy steal protection and I could buy cool stuff like name changes, username and title changes, set a certain font color or style for posts and even purchase points to upload smilies. Then there's the vbookie addon which was also awesome. But i had trouble with it since 1:1 ratios can't be hardcoded. It's way more fun if it was cause then i could just let all my paid usergroup members create bets and not really have to worry about points inflation due to the 1:1 limit. K thats my rant for the day im out.

There are a couple of options for this:

    Purchase "icons/images" using points: MyShop
"Gamble" on sports or other topics: SportsBook

I would have to pay a developer to modify sports book. I basically need a seperate bookie permission that can only allow 1:1 ratios.

I don't think my members care about icons and images. Most of them are grown adults, they'd rather gamble.

You may want to ask over on the official support forums: SportsBook Forums

Now, granted, my "adults" are children at heart as Disney fans. But, you may want to make cool images (and display one or two at a time in the sig field) like banners or something. This feature was great and coupled with a way to purchase more points (via PayPal integration) actually brought in decent revenue per month as some of the images were "limited edition" (I added less of those 'in stock' and never replenish that particular image) and people liked to collect them :)

I will definitely beg bobster about that later after my site grows some more. There may be some members who like that sort've stuff but my site doesn't have a theme like yours, so it wouldn't make any sense. They'd rather gamble, trust me. I want to gamble. It's no fun doing it in the arcade because although it saves your scores, it does not have a points system.

They can display images of the "Ace of Spades" or "Craps" or a Double Zero from a Roulette wheel. Think about it, it may work. Maybe display in postbit instead of under the sig. You never know ;)

Anyways, the resource manager may work for you down the road to sell/download ebooks about gambling and stuff.

What do people "spend" their Silver Crosses and Purple Hearts on? What do college kids spend their championship trophies on? "Badges" and "Trophies" are a huge motivator for people. Even more so when it is competitive. The "likes" and "trophies" in XenForo. So there's no need for money, faux or otherwise, just recognition by peers.

I'm talking about points as a form of currency, not rewards.

I was responding to your idea that people need monetary attachment to points. They don't. They'll respond to the points themselves. Basic gaming behavior.

That conflicts with points being useful as a currency when points become inflated. Ex. The Casino, which is also a form of gaming.

If you go to another site, you can get "real" odds. Yes, sometimes the payout is above 1:1, and the opponent is not, that is the point in gambling. I have seen odds listed at a "REAL" odds site 400:1 for one team, and 1:40 for its opponent. That is part of gambling. I don't understand what the issue is with the ratios though. And if you only want to allow 1:1 ratios, then that isn't "real" gambling.

I understand that's okay if the point's system that you use in sportsbook is only being used in sportsbook. In the example I provide in the first post, I'm referring to using that same point system for both Sportsbook, a casino addon and a shop. Anything above a 1:1 ratio will completely break a points system by causing inflation in an e-shop letting users buy everything easily at once and make gambling in a casino just as pointless when you can easily just bet in Sportsbook to get a ton of points. It takes the whole risk factor out of gambling or the shop features that let you steal user's points etc.

Isn't that part of gambling? Wager big, win big..... or lose. There are risks with both. It won't cause inflation if you are actually doing the betting as it is supposed to be done in a real gambling setting. Why do you think there are casinos in real life? The house wins on the majority. If the opposite was true, you'd not have a Las Vegas or Atlantic City, or river casinos.

If you are using a REAL betting site for your odds, there won't be inflation. Its as simple as that. If you are making random "events", then it might be possible. But going "real", it won't. It will even out in the long run. Not everyone wins.

Does anyone understand what I'm talking about at all?

I understand you are talking about using one points system for all your gambling and shop needs. The use of sportsbook cash will not cause inflation if your Sportsbook add on is run properly. I'm not sure how I can be more clear about that.

I have been using Sportsbook since it was first available. We have made over 200+ events, 500+ wagers. Each member began with $5,000. We also have [bd] Banking installed, so our users can gain cash from posting, replying, attachments, and receiving likes. We have over 7,000 members (not that that is huge, just using as an example).

We have ran our Sportsbook using OFFICIALLY posted odds for events.

After 6+ months, we have only 10 people that have been able to double there money, even after gaining money from posting and all of that. Now, if you claim Sportsbook would cause inflation, please show me how it will.

Say someone bets something like say hmm a 3:1 ratio. If they bet a lot of points then when they win they'll get 3 times that amount. If they do that several more times then when they go into the eShop and buy a feature/item whatever, they will be able to afford almost everything in the shop. I don't agree with this. I think that a poster should be able to make a lot of money gambling in a casino addon as well and not just Sportsbook. Sportsbook ratios above 1:1 keep the casino from being a challenging addon to let members earn points.

Ok. That is the part of "gambling". If they bet on those odds and lose, guess what.... they lost that money. That is the ENTIRE point of "gambling".

Sure, they can bet, win, double their cash. Do it again, double there cash... then, on the third one, loss. There is no inflation if run properly.

Maybe inflation is the incorrect term I'm using.

Lemme try to explain it a different way.

Lets say a username change costs 10000 points in the shop.

It is sold at a high price to discourage too many multiple name changes.

Unlike Sportsbook, which starts you out with points, you do not start members out with points.

The points are built up by stuff they've done such posting, creating threads, etc.

Before Sportsbook, they could steal each other's points and use the casino addon to gain points as well, even though the risk is high.

Enter Sportsbook. If a bookie creates a bet that rewards members a ridiculous amount of points then when the bet is settled, that member earns a ton of points.

Now everytime you enter the shop or casino, there is no major risk because you can easily earn a ton of points for your purchases and gambling through Sportsbook.
