one-way trip to Mars

Space-X are only delivering cargo to low earth orbit (a great achievement don't get me wrong) but perhaps your right the future of space travel will be dominated by private corps (I hope not). They have some way to go before they can land multi-ton habitats on Mars and life support systems when NASA itself only managed to land a 1 ton rover (curiosity) on Mars which was at the limit of their technological know how.

The trend with Space Travel in the late 20th century and early 21st is to say you're going to do something, but only do it eventually. After a long gap and retries. We don't seem to be that excited to go out there anymore. But we seem to know deep down inside that we'll have to, eventually.
