Add-on New thread type: Classified Ads

Since XF 2.2 will have Discussion, Article, Question and Suggestion thread types, the opportunity is ripe for a third-party add-on developer to create a Classified Ads thread type. I could possibly hack away at it myself but I trust an add-on developer to tackle something like this and do it properly. Given that I use a @ThemeHouse theme on one of my larger sites, this would probably be a good opportunity for them to create a popular add-on. (Paging @Mike Creuzer 😉.) We might have a few unique requirements but the general layout of an Ads thread type would lay a good foundation.

It might be worth making a suggestion for this in the suggestions forum - even if it doesn't make it to the core xenforo if there plenty of votes then there could be more chance of developers taking it on board. I imagine a lot of addon developers keep an eagle eye on that forum to see what might be popular.

having said that this suggestion does include classifieds:

Neither one impressed me either. Now that we have thread types, this should be easy to do. Some formatting changes are all that we'd really need, along with a good presentation of the custom fields we would need. I'm too far gone (mentally) to do coding anymore.

Agreed. Same here.

Im open to it, I dont know enough about the products that are on the market. I know the demand has been high. Perhaps we could work with one of the existing resource owners. And if they do not work, I think we will throw hat in the ring at some point.

For us the main requirements would be

  • Ability to show (certain) user fields in an article preview (e.g price)
  • Mark as sold which automatically moves to a sold subforum
  • Buyer/seller feedback maybe.
  • payment to seller with automatic commission to forum
  • Image gallery/carousel within post

I truly hope so Mike. I would definitely help fund it and offer to help write the requirements (that’s what I do for a living).

It wouldn't need to have ties to any commerce or payment system. It would just be a more concise type of listing that would use custom fields for certain conditions of the sale (price, location, currencies, etc.), and display images in a more appropriate manner.

In essence, just another thread type that changes the layout of the first post.

The only option I might want is a way for only the thread starter to bump their own listing (within limits, such as once per 24 hours), with comments (aka replies) not bumping the listing in the forum.

I heard there is an addon from a certain quality dev coming out with a large Classifieds system :D. If they are watching the thread will likely post something. We might extend their software with certain features depending on their plan.

My coding skills are rusty and 10 years out of date, so my ability to do anything like this is impossible at the moment. If I knew how to start off by creating a new thread type, and could rearrange the style on an existing thread type (like the "article" type), that's all we'd need.

I'll have to see what this new add-on looks like, if/when it is released. No offense to the others, but they don't fit our needs--too complicated.
