Hi all,
We have a group of users who support the site via two (voluntary) membership tiers using PayPal Legacy. We have new PayPal REST and Stripe set up on the site and tested. The group is large enough that manually chasing each user individually would be extremely time consuming.
We're aware of the January 2027 deadline for Legacy deprecation and want to handle this professionally and fairly for our members, ideally without too great an interruption to or loss of the site's income. We have a few specific questions for anyone who has been through a similar migration assuming there is no easy shortcut I have missed!
1. Has anyone successfully managed a bulk migration from PayPal Legacy to Stripe or PayPal REST? What approach worked best for member communication: site announcement, PM, e-mail, etc. or a combination?
2. We plan to rename existing Legacy tiers and create new identical tiers with the old names under the new payment profiles. Has anyone done this and are there any pitfalls to watch for?
3. If a user has an active Legacy upgrade and we manually add a new Stripe or PayPal REST upgrade of the same type, then manually remove the Legacy upgrade — does XenForo correctly retain the user group from the REST upgrade or does removal of the Legacy upgrade record risk removing the group even if the other upgrade is still active?
4. Has anyone found a reliable way to bulk cancel PayPal Legacy billing agreements either via PayPal's API or merchant dashboard tools rather than cancelling individually? It would be particularly useful if reimbursement up to a certain date feature were available but I think this may be too much to hope for.
5. Any add-ons recommended for bulk member messaging (so they receive it as an individual, not as a group message) targeted at specific upgrade tiers, ideally in batches?
6. Any other lessons learned from a Legacy PayPal migration we should be aware of?
I hope this will be a useful resource for anyone else in the same situation!
Thank you in advance,
G.
