Has anyone tried implementing anything like this?
Two minutes of messing around gives ...
Haven't even thought about a messenger style layout but kind of digging it.
I like it!
It's very simple.
I'll post details tomorrow and may even release it as a very basic resource in the form of a template mod.
Not a bad idea -- could use a little tweaking, but I think your onto something
This is how the narrow responsive view looks.
Obviously this is just CSS so it can be styled to suit.
Does it work ok with multiple people?
Yes - your own avatar is on the right and the avatars of others who respond are all on the left.
I'll post a few more screenshots in a minute or so.
This is how it works with three participants.

IMHO could be interesting to see how it appear on threads too.
@Brogan that's awesome and this is my modification:
Did you actually implement that?
The fact it's just the add-on and I just modified/developed it.
Brogan, I think it should be core.
I like where you're going with this! Personally from a design perspective I think it'd look nicer with the little 'arrow' type indicators that are in the stock postbit design. I'm not sure what the screen element is actually called but here's what I mean....
I prefer the clean, simple look so I just removed that using CSS.
You can always restore it, or even do something with an arrow on the message content instead.
It's not something I'm going to implement on my own site so I'm not going to spend too much time on it.
Currently it's just a single template modification and a few lines of CSS.
