I'm struggling to find the options I need, but can anyone tell me the simplest way to get macrons into the text editor please?

ā, ē, ī, ō, ū, Ā, Ē, Ī, Ō and Ū

I've even tried adding them under a button in the font editor but I'm not sure I'm getting that right either

I'm not saying it's the best/easiest way, but you could use the Post Macros add-on:

Seems a little overkill for your needs though.
