Looking forward now to 1.1

Dang...Can I say I just got excited about forum software....for the first time in 6 years! Wowsers!
Last time was when we jumped from vB 2.x.x to 3.0!

wonder if there will be any more x.x.X releases now that we've sen 1.0.4 or would the devs solely focus on 1.1 from now on?

I hope 1.1 comes along soon :) My forum will be depending on the group-promote feature! And a lot of the features will benefit. Currently we are still developing so xD I hope 1.1 is ready soon so that we can launch with 1.1~ or we gotta wait till 1.1 for launch as well :P

I keep reading here and there about a new feature that allow a member to join a custom usergroup to gain access to private forums.
Is that a mod/feature request/1.1 feature?

This sounds more like promotional/usergroup upgrade based on number of posts, likes, etc.
I don't see how you can use this to replace joinable usergroup where users with 0 post can request to join a specific usergroup and have some moderator approve it.
Ragtek made an add-on to do this afaik.

It does.

Joinable Usergroup ?
Members joining groups ... sounds like Member Groups.

What is the exact usage scenario ?

Back when I was using phpBB about 3 years ago, we can create user groups and assign normal members to become the admin of that group. Every members can request to join groups, group admins can approve requests, and members can be a member of as many groups as they like. Groups can also be set to free-for-all with no request, request required and invite only.

The main thing that groups can do is to give access to sub forums. But my members loved it more for their name's styling and group icons.

I had each group set up to use different css colors for their names and show different icons under their names. Members can even freely switch around their "primary" group to switch colors and icons on their own.

It was pretty fun and lively.
