My sites are all very tiny so this would be great. I so hate following up several alerts only to find 3 word posts in each - but that would be fine on a thread I was watching in real time.

Only thing is as it would encourage quick posts it could flood notification emails?

sorta, but this live thread auto loads the post for you.
Think of it like a chatroom but inside a thread. Of course you can always use a chatroom but this adds a permanent thread record of that discussion. It's rather useful when viewing live streams and that what I and many other intend to use it for.

Do you think that a live thread kills off the quality of forum activity? People write shorter answers and not as in-depth. That would be my main concern with this.

The purpose is different. You're going to have shorter posts anyway, so the idea is to facilitate that. It's much more of a chat room type environment.
