Japan just hit by magnitude 8.9 earthquake

I'll post some pictures when I get them, but my cousin's marine unit is there now flying helicopters with supplies and such. He hasn't had a chance to post them to his blog yet. From his email though he said the damage when you see it in person and right in your face as they fly in to their drops is practically indescribable.

They need our support for only a brief time? Jeeze I'm glad I'm not counting on you for support. The people of Japan are going to need the support of the people of this world for years to come.

*snip*

So then, I can count on your support to help feed the children... I would think that you would figure that 15,000 deaths a day on one continent would help you rethink on where you should apply your most on your efforts of support. I already made a contribution to Red Cross for Japan, but I make yearly ones towards 'World Vision'. I know you are going to rethink this or maybe you are far to 'Desensitized' on this real issue that happens daily...

A video shot from one of the helicopters flying at the Fukushima reactor plant shows the devastation: :(

President Obama is on TV right now. Japan's nuclear reactor is melting down. They have ordered (requested) all American's who are within Japan to leave.

He's saying he does not believe Hawaii will be affected by radiation... He's a fool or misinformed

That just silly, as I am sure he get his advisers do check for ocean/weather currents from NASA.

Seems ok for residents in Hawaii and any visitors.

Having studied nuclear physics (not majored in it, but studied) .... The radiation form the yield they have... A full stage 9 meltdown will take longer, but if it happens they're f**ked.

My Grandmother (on my mom's side) lived there when they drop the bomb. Kind of made me want to know about the affects of nuclear fallout and the technology behind it. So I studied the stuff in college and again later in life. I'm not thinking it will be the end of the world, mind you... But Japan is good as dead and we're (world wide) will have some radiation spikes (will vary depending on location and weather).

Some of those spikes will be harmless and some of those spikes will be worth worrying about. It will depend on location and weather... Weather changes all the time and the fallout, will not happen all at once over night. We're talking long term affects.

Chernobyl was an small reactor and it affected the whole continent. Japan holds a higher yield and has 6 reactors there at that 1 plant. This is not going to end well

Take what you will.

I watched his speech and I didn't hear him tell (or ask) any Americans to leave Japan. He said that he appreciated their efforts in helping the Japanese people. He also didn't say that any reactors are melting down (at least he didn't use those words). He did say that 3 of the 4 reactors are "very hot", and they're trying to cool them down with water drops, but it's like using a squirt gun on a forest fire.

Further he did not say that he does not believe that Hawaii will be affected by radiation. He said that there is no radiation danger at this time, but that officials will continue to monitor the situation, both in Hawaii and on our west coast.

I watched it too. I basically translated political speak to common English.

Political speak: "Everything is OK, do not panic"

Means: "Everything is OK for now, but you should take precautions... It is going to get bad"

Political speak: "We have withdrawn everyone within 50 miles, to help prevent risk of exposure of radiation"
Means: "There is a problem, you should do what you have to; to get as far away as you can"

It is not like 'Chernobyl' and anyone in North/South America will not feel the effects here. You get more radioactivity by eating a bananas every day then being expose to the air currents from far away. Canada and Europe would be glowing by now... All they will do is cement the building until they can remove containment safely away. Yes, the region located near the reactor will soon show signs of death, but they will contain the building and remove the surrounding soil.

I see that you are the type to yell out 'FIRE' in a movie theather if you only see smoke....

No, not at all.

But I do know when things are being down played. If you want to listen to the media which tells you all is well, do not worry, this will not affect us or anything outside of Japan (or 50 miles, depending on which new source you tune into).... Good for you.

It is better to evacuate people in a calm manner or you get chaos and everyone trampling over each other to get on a transport. I would rather be told a white lie and get out safely. If the worst comes, then they can removes those quickly to a safer distance.

I understand and respect the idea of not causing a panic and un-needed chaos. Such a thing would only cause more problems.... We can agree in that.

But I also believe in not "down playing" to the point of misinformation. Leaving only 50 miles away from a plant that could be reaching a stage 9 meltdown... Is not going to do you any good. And by the time that this is made aware... It's going to be to late for most.... It takes a lot of time to move people from such a large location.

Chernobyl was a RBMK reactor rated at 1500 MWe and there were 4 reactors at Chernobyl (one had a core melt accident, the other three kept running for years after but could have blown just as easily.

Japan's Fukushima plant are BWR and rated for 439, and the rest for 760 MWe (nowhere near the 1500 of Chernobyl). Yes, there are 6 reactors at the plant but only 4 are in crisis.

So your contention that Chernobyl was a small reactor is incorrect. Japan's actually is smaller.

Granted it's not going to end well, but not to the extent you are crying "fire".

Chernobyl also did not have the containment structures that Fukushima has. Likewise there are independent bodies within the station monitoring the situation. If it was going to get to the point of a large scale disaster and release of fissile material they would inform people, not leave it to the plant / Japans government to release.
