I've been into add-on dev for a while but I'm quite **** when it comes to stuff like this, I'd appreciate help.
XF 2.2 Is there a guide/documentary on best practices for add-on development?

The forum seems quite dead, and the doc doesn't really have examples or guides does it
Not really but if you use the guide for building an add-on and complete the the tutorial it is very helpful. Also, if you download one of the many free add-ons and unzip them you can look at the xml, PHP and other files as examples including the correct directory structure.
