Invision community Vs Xenforo

Just saw this post from the team at invision, when asked why their software was more expensive than XF. I love me some drama so I thought I'd share it, Nothing against either company ofc.

The big thing that I think people should consider when it comes to IPS: yes, you get a lot of functionality but if you aren’t on Cloud, you are a second tier customer and it is fairly likely IPS 6 will be cloud only. (They have committed to v5 being self hosting, but the shakeup of pricing model makes it clear that they do not expect this to sustain long term.)

Ipboard is a nice system, but when switching from mybb to the baby community, I researched forum systems a lot. I even asked my white-collar cyber security experts friends to do research. Xenforo received full marks during this research. So I switched to xenforo. IPS is also a secure system and a beautiful system. But my choice was xenforo.

New advertising threads again?

I noticed months ago that "users" in forums started topics specifically about Invision vs (...), but had little success.

The best base for my community is XenForo. Safe, reasonably priced, scalable and fast, even when there are many users online in the forum at the same time.

A software company that does not base their decisions primarily on their code and development is not a good software company.

I am also always wondering what are these 'complex communities' they always say they include in discussions... Of the large communities that use IPB that I personally know the owner of, I can say without much doubt that they have ever been included in such discussions. I know of one game developer who has been looking to move away from IPB for several years, but it is a lengthy process to prepare to migrate so many communities.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone from xenForo doing anything like that.
Matt and Kier use to be friends (or at least friendly): https://xenforo.com/community/threa...d-of-xenforo-and-rightly-so.13451/post-177173

I'm not going to speculate on the falling out, as I only have second or third hand rumors, but it is very telling how IPB takes the low road every time they can when it comes to XF, and it is basically at every level of IPB staff rather than just one or two people. In comparison, even on TAZ I have rarely ever seen a staff member speak badly about IPB, and at most maybe have had a snarky response to criticism from IPB staff members.

I remember trying invision free which was the free version of it.
The guys at invision kept changing it's name and adding advertising to it.
Had to step up my anti virus software game.
I also liked the look of the invision site. But soon realised it was too expensive.
They make you buy 6 monthly licences... they were so strict.
Glad i'm with xenforo.
Can't stand a forum that has so many restrictions and is expensive.

Might be unpopular opinion here… But I do believe that invision and xenforo are definitely not targeting the same audience. I have a license for invision which I imagine is quite useless now. I wouldn’t use it for anything for my own use. XenForo is one of the few options around that caters to the folks who want to run a traditional forum type website. Invision is just too expensive and complex for a hobby community. They are focusing on corporate market and that’s great. I do just hope that XenForo does not take a similar route with v3 and beyond and become too complex/expensive/messy to use for a simple forum website. Not everyone needs a suite of social networking tools. It’s just like WordPress… It is the last thing I would like to use today for a simple website/blog. At one point of time, it was the only thing I would use. In the end, the market is large enough to cater to two different types of software models. Not everyone needs to be in competition with everyone else out there.
