XF 2.0 Invalid regular expression

I'm testing XF2 but the regular expression for user names we currently have on the live site is rejected on the XF2 installation.
We're using

^[a-z0-9\s]+$

Invalid regular expression.
Irregular expressions are beyond me. Can anyone help with the issue, please?

Maybe you should use / in start and end?
Like it

/^[a-z0-9\s]+$/
