If you won the lottery…

If you won the lottery what would you do? Buy? Would you help people?

For me.. I already won the lottery with my kids so I would set them up for life and my future grandchildre. Then give the rest away. Animal related charity would be high on my list

I’d spend most of it on other people. People who need $20k to start a business, that type of thing. Not because I want to invest to see rewards but to give people the chance to go do something amazing with an opportunity.

I’ve done smaller things in my time based on what wealth I can afford to share - I have donated licences of software to people before now, I’ve given away (for free) an XF licence in the past for someone to go build a forum with it. I’ve donated to add on creators not because I wanted their addons but I wanted to encourage them to keep doing what they do because it enriches us all. We all benefit from sharing it around.

These days I find myself making sure I give decent tips on our version of DoorDash - if you drove to collect food for me and bring it to me hot, the least I can do is give you $15 in tips.

You can either be greedy and keep the lot, or you can be altruistic and benevolent. I would choose the latter. Of course, I would want to enjoy the fruits of such a monstrous win, but I would love to do something like 'The Secret Millionaire' and go undercover to discover worthy causes and then help them out with a boost up. There would also be times when I would be drawn to helping a family who need medical treatment for their child, but could never afford it.

My Mum used to drum it into me that 'it's nice to be nice' and although I'm from England I often use the Americanism of 'paying it forward'. You can only buy so many things, and go to so many places and live the life of Riley, but there's not much satisfaction in doing that day in day out. Rewards that come as a smile or a hug are far more enriching than materialistic things.
