XF 1.2 how to diagnose intermittent 500 internal server errors

Hi... I've started getting a lot of "Error 500 internal server error" on my forum (skeptiko.com/forum). I've talked my host (1and1) about 5 times and wind up running in circles. Anyone know how I can find out what's going on?

A 500 error is very generic.

The only way to determine the cause is by interrogating the server error logs.
