XF is currently installed on my forum.mysite.net / but I need to move to mysite.net

How to change the root of the forum without losing its contents?

All you have to do is update the Board URL in the ACP:

ACP -> Home -> Options -> Basic Board Information -> Board URL

Then move the files to the new location.

The location of the install should make no difference so that error shouldn't be related.
